Does your homework help you learn?

Does your homework help you learn? My opinion is that homework for the most part does not help you learn. I think there are a few classes where this is true, for example I think homework for language and math classes helps you learn. By doing homework you are required to practice and apply what you learned in class. This being said for other classes homework doesn’t help you learn. Homework is teaching you topics that should have been taught in class, because I think you remember and learn better in a classroom setting.

This being said, I think that it is also important to note that most high school students participate in some form of extracurricular activities. Most students rush through their homework after their extracurricular activities not caring about learning or understanding just trying to complete it. Students tend to not care as much about homework and most feel as though we have enough class time to learn. If classes are at least 45 minutes long students feel that is more than enough time to be taught. Students also feel that some teachers use homework to teach the students so they don’t have to, which is a waste of time for both parties.

Lots of students also tend to learn better in a classroom setting where it is easier to focus and learn. While doing homework it is harder to focus and learn because most students don’t have a proper learning environment at home or wherever they might do their homework. I think the learning environment is so vital for learning because it helps students have a place where they are used to learning so they can focus on learning. Students also have an easier time learning if they can ask the teacher questions which are harder to ask for homework. So in class work is helpful for students to get a better understanding of the topics.

Though many students agree that homework does not help us learn, teachers seem to disagree. Some teachers do not assign homework yet the students still have a full understanding of the subject. Though some people argue that students learn subject matter better with homework I disagree because homework just shows that the students already know the subject. Students tend to already know the subject before they complete the homework. As a result of this all homework really does is show their teachers they know the subjects which teachers should see in class. So, I do not believe that homework helps students learn.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your blog post in part because you made some good points that are easy to relate to. I participate in sports and I agree that having lots of homework after sports is very stressful. Your blog made me realize that sometimes I really do rush through my homework just to get it done. I also agree that homework is very important for classes like math and language classes where you need lots of practice in the subject. However, in addition to helping teachers understand what the students understand, I think that homework helps students learn what they don't understand. But I think that you make some really important points and I agree that homework can be sometimes be somewhat unnecessary.

  2. I really liked your blog post! I agree that homework is helpful for classes like math when you have to apply the material that you learned in class for practice, but for others it may not be as helpful. I feel like many high schoolers try to get homework done any way they can for a better grade instead of actually trying to understand the material. I think that for certain classes, homework should be mandatory but in classes that homework does not help the student as much, it should be optional.

  3. I really enjoyed your blog post; it had a lot of specific ideas and examples. I would definitely agree that homework suits much better in some classes rather than others. I also agree that lots of students don't actually put effort into learning when doing homework, but rather rush to get an ok grade after doing extracurriculars. In my opinion, homework can be helpful for certain students who learn better on their own, but for the majority of people learning strictly in class rather than doing homework is much more optimal for learning. Having optional homework would be great since students can focus on things they are struggling with and not on things they have learned already.

  4. I completely agree on your point about homework being unnecessary in certain scenarios, such as during classes in which content should be taught and understood in the class period. Homework in classes such as math, however, does make sense because there's an objective skill that you are practicing in order to understand the material for yourself. I think the comments you made about how in class settings are better for learning are pretty subjective from student to student. For me personally, sometimes in class settings are more difficult to focus in, and I work better better outside of class. Overall though, I think you made some really great points.

  5. I think this is a really interesting point. Homework is helpful in some cases but can also be counterproductive in most others. I think optional homework would be a good idea because students can choose what to do with their time rather than spend time on already known material. I personally am fine with homework, as long as the workload is not too much.

  6. I think this argument makes a lot of good points and suggests many things I wouldn't think of. Homework for practice makes sense, but unusual and I think it's important that you noted how students have different learning styles. Optional homework might be a good idea, but it might give students an opportunity to slack off more.

  7. I think this was a compelling blog post. I feel that many students often wonder why they're assigned homework and whether or not it's necessary. You bring up many good points that I can agree with such as the fact that homework can just be a regurgitation of what was already taught in class. I do also agree that math homework is definitely useful to learn the topic. I personally do find homework useful at times but sometimes it can feel unnecessary.
